A Cannabis plant is composed of over a hundred different cannabinoids. In fact, there are around 113, including CBD (cannabidiol). This is a little known chemical but it’s possible you’ve heard the more famous chemical, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It has long been associated with THC and thus cannabis culture, in general. While this might win it fans among the younger generation it has done nothing to improve its image in the eyes of the law.
Legislation has been long in coming with regard to the legal status of CBD oil in the UK. This is partly the reason as to why there are so many people with a CBD vape on them in the UK. This could be largely down to the fact that people don’t really know what CBD oil actually does. And much of that confusion is down to what relationship, if any, CBD would have to do with the psychoactive properties of THC.
Research is still ongoing and improving our understanding of what CBD is all the time so there is nothing definitive to say about it.
A dawning apprehension appears on people when they wonder if they should Google, ‘buy CBD in the UK 2019’ or ‘cannabidiol oil for sale’. After all, what are the legal parameters around CBD and hemp oil? It’s a murky subject to be sure.
It seems that no matter who you talk to everyone has a different take on it. We’ve done our best to put together a guide that’ll help you understand how we arrived at the latest legislation. Only recently, has the Home Office announced that specialist doctors may, legally, prescribe cannabis-derived medicinal products.
In 1971, CBD was initially caught under the umbrella of a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. This piece of legislation did not differentiate between any of the chemical components that made up the original plant.
It wasn’t until thirty years later, in 2001, when CBD oil and hemp oil was further placed into a Schedule 1, which are substances that have no medicinal value. Of course, this is a pretty huge net to cast. Cannabis sativa is a plant that contains over 100 different cannabinoids. Among others, included in this, are the most famous two, THC and CBD.
Only three years ago, in 2016, the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) stated that any CBD oil product that was advertised to be used for medical purposes needed to be fully licensed. No longer were advertisers able to just slap a description of medical benefits down and think that was fine.
Since that time medical licenses have been short in coming. Retailers like Holland and Barrett get around all of this by selling CBD oil as a food supplement in the UK. Unsurprisingly, many other retailers are popping up and doing their best to capitalize on this slight loop-hole. You can now find cafes and shops in every part of the country from Plymouth to Leeds all stocking CBD related products.
Most, if not, in fact, all of these are easily available over the counter but there are in fact medications that do require a prescription. We’re talking, of course, about Sativex.
Only one brand of CBD oil so far, Sativex, has been approved in the United Kingdom by the MHRA. This is not simply regular CBD or cannabidiol, however. This is, in fact, the first cannabis-based medicine legally allowed inside the UK. It boasts a 50:50 CBD to THC ratio.
The regulatory body in the UK has deemed this as an appropriate treatment for multiple sclerosis-related spasticities. This is when a patient has shown inadequate responses to other treatments.
This, of course, did not occur overnight. Previous to this licensing, Sativex had been studied at length for its potential effects on MS-related symptoms. Only in time can we hope that the CBD laws UK change to accommodate future developments.
When you’re looking to buy CBD for sale it’s important to know what you’re looking out for. You want to find CBD products that contain the full spectrum of the chemical compound. These products should contain cannabinoids, terpenoids, essential oils, and all the other compounds that are found within the cannabis plant. Cannabidiol has become very popular so it’s easy to make mistakes when you buy it.
The Home Office has also explicitly stated that it’s perfectly reasonable to expect 0.2% THC content in cannabis oil including CBD vape oil, CBD capsules, CBD patches and any and all CBD tinctures. This is as long as the THC cannot be easily separated from the CBD. Most CBD oils are entirely derived from hemp which contains none, or negligible amounts of THC. Industrial hemp is, in fact, a particularly flexible compound. It’s been used for everything from building materials to clothing.
Like we said above, hemp oil or CBD oil for sale should contain some level of terpenoid. “But what are terpenoids?” I hear you mutter under your breath. Well, terpenoids are naturally occurring organic chemicals that are found within plant oils. They are often noted for their aromatic qualities and play crucial roles in traditional herbal remedies. In other words, they can make things smell a lot better.
Terpenoids can be found in quite a range of plants and herbs. There are over 20,000 terpenes and at least a 100 of them are found in the cannabis sativa plant. They contribute to the scent of eucalyptus, flavours of cloves, ginger and cinnamon, and even the colouring of sunflowers and tomatoes. Not bad, huh?
Glandular trichomes are small, hair-like structures that appear on the surface of leaves and flowers. These are the crucial homes for cannabinoids and terpenes. Some of the most important terpenes that are found in this plant are myrcene, limonene, linalool, and humulene.
Since soaring into the popularity over the last number of years, CBD has become a choice for many people looking for something different. The CBD industry is simply exploding in the UK and it’s becoming easier than ever to find CBD oil for sale the UK. Just Google the phrase, ‘buy CBD oil UK’, and you’ll be inundated with websites and advertisements for stores around the United Kingdom.
In towns and cities across the country, locally run stores are popping up that sell the very best CBD products. Whether it’s CBD gummies, CBD capsules, CBD tinctures, CBD teas, a CBD vape pen, CBD infused shakes, or CBD creams there are more choices than ever for hemp-CBD oil.
The number of people using CBD in the UK is estimated at somewhere around three hundred thousand. Thanks to increasing research and public perception changing around the idea of legalizing cannabis sativa, CBD will only increase in demand. It’s important to be getting the full spectrum of CBD. But what exactly do we mean by that?
When people say ‘full spectrum CBD’ what they mean is that they’re getting the full range terpenes and cannabinoids that have stayed intact during the extraction process. Imprecise handling during the production of CBD oil can make a huge difference in the quality. When you’re looking to buy CBD oil UK make sure that you’re getting only the best kind. With cannabidiol, you have to be extremely careful when your buying it.
