Can CBD Help Relieve Pain?

For those who experience chronic pain on a regular basis, CBD has gained popularity as a means of relief, and as a natural approach. It can come in the form of topically applied cream, tincture drops, and even vitamins. A large majority of these products are derived from industrial hemp, this is due to its higher CBD content than that of marijuana.

What Is CBD?

Whilst it is a cannabinoid, CBD won’t produce any type of ‘high’ or psychoactive effects like those associated with THC. The human body itself produces a type of cannabinoid on its own. These are called endocannabinoids and help regulate the body to control everything from hunger, sleep, pain, and the immune system. Taking CBD can influence the body to use its own cannabinoids more quickly and effectively.

Does CBD Work for Pain Relief?

The use of CBD in relation to pain dates all the way back to Ancient China and is thought to to ease and relieve chronic pain by reducing inflammation. The cannabinoid rich products are also said to promote sounder sleep, reduce anxiety, nausea, and even increase appetite.

Scientists are still figuring out exactly how CBD alleviates pain. Evidence suggests that CBD effects the endocannabinoid system through cell-to-cell communication. Interestingly, when it comes to relieving pain it has also be proven that topical application to localized areas provides more consistent levels of CBD and can be more effective (for pain relief).

So far, a large majority of evidence and studies are based on animal research. With this being said, results so far have been positive as well as promising. Research includes a 2007 study in the Pain Journal which saw scientists observe CBD preventing joint pain in rats with osteoarthritis. Another 2016 study from the European Journal of Pain showed significant improvement in joint swelling, measures of pain, and inflammation in rats with arthritis.

CBD for Cancer Treatment Relief

As well as orthodox pain relief CBD is also known to lesson symptoms associated with standardised cancer treatments. There are a few studies in mice that have shown a reduction of cancerous tumours. Main research however, does focus on CBD as a means of managing pain, treating nausea, and increasing patient appetite.

Side Effects of CBD

CBD does not pose any significant risks for its users but mild side effects are possible. These might include nausea, irritability, and issues sleeping. The side effects are however rare when proper dosage is issued. For best health practice, always consult your doctor before using any product your unfamiliar with.
